Washington, D.C. -- Safe & Affordable DC is launching an independent expenditure campaign to elect Janeese Lewis George as the next Mayor of Washington, DC. The effort is supported by some of D.C.’s most prominent unions, including SEIU 32BJ; the Baltimore-DC Metro Building Trades Council; the Philadelphia/Baltimore/Washington Laborers’ District Council, LiUNA; UFCW Local 400; The Working Families Party; and UNITE HERE Locals 23 and 25. Additional unions and District-based individuals and advocacy organizations are expected to add their support in the coming weeks.
Safe & Affordable is chaired by Joslyn Williams, who led the Washington-Metropolitan Council of the AFL-CIO for 34 years. “Janeese Lewis George running for the first open mayoral seat in 20 years in D.C. is a historic opportunity for so many of us in the District,” Williams said. “D.C. is too expensive for most of the people who live here. Our government isn’t delivering for working families the way it needs to. We’re with Janeese Lewis George because she’s the only candidate in this race with the right set of ideas and talents to fix what’s broken in the District and who will fearlessly and consistently stand up against the bullies for all of D.C. In contrast, D.C.'s labor unions have watched Kenyan McDuffie -- despite his rhetoric on affordability -- vote time and again to make D.C. more expensive for workers and our families.”
Safe & Affordable D.C. will ensure Lewis George’s message reaches persuadable voters and base constituencies at scale to shore up her robust, diverse coalition. Safe & Affordable will also draw contrasts with her primary opponent, Kenyan McDuffie, whose record of voting against workers and ambivalence about confronting the Trump administration are sources of significant concern for D.C. voters.
Safe & Affordable sent its first direct mail to D.C. voters this week, which highlights Janeese Lewis George’s stellar record on the D.C. Council standing up for working families and all residents who call D.C. home.
